Cat-fishing is the act of creating a fake or stolen identity or online personality to deceive others on social media or dating sites. This is done to deceive, manipulate, scam a victim often for financial gain, emotional manipulation or to build fraudulent romantic relationships, or emotional control of amusement. Cat-Fishing often building intense quick emotional connections, love bombing while refusing video calls or in person meetings. They steals photos, personal information to lure victims on social media and dating a apps. A phenomenon that originated from the 2010 documentary catfish. They are a deceptive person who uses fake photos names and personal details to create a fictional character.

Motivations for doing this are many. Common motives includes loneliness, insecurity, social engineering, financial scams, pig butchering, scam revenge. Signs to spot profile pictures that look like models, reluctance to video chat, intense, quick emotional attachment, and inconsistencies in stories. Reasons to steal money, emotional abuse, revenge, insecurity or simply toying with someone. They bait you creating a persona then hook you building trust and affection with you. They then reef you, demanding money, gifts or a complimentary photos, and red flags. Will refuse to meet you in person or to do a video chat so you can see them. The relationship moves very fast too fast to be healthy. Wanting to receive money from you. They will often fabricate an emergency around you, all there stories are lies and are inconsistent. Cat-fishing and kitten-fishing involves an entirely fake identity being used. Kitten -fishing is a milder form that involves minor lies it is heavily filtered or they use old photos to appear there younger selves and to look more attractive.

A milder form of cat-fishing where individuals make minor exaggerations about their appearance or life rather than creating a completely fake identity.
