The fear system in our bodies are built with a fight or flight system During our evolution, this system enabled us to identify dangerous situations and to survive. It is the biological mechanism that one helped to save our life, but now it can hamper our happiness. This same fear system acts as our psychological backlog of instinctual terror, past traumas, current worries and our fear of the future. It is an essential system, as it pushes us to look out for ourselves- any time there is a threat or danger this system triggers us to act in response. However these days, there s very little use for this instinctual primal fear system. Most of us are confronted with very few survival situation in which we need a blast of adrenaline to propel us into motion. We rely more on the neocortex, the part of the brain that is responsible for our intellectual pursuits- creativity, intuition and spiritual interests which is where our perception of happiness resides.
Twelve Steps For Happiness
We can all come up with our own unique definitions of what happiness is to us. As one person’s definition of happiness could be another one’s misery. There are twelve qualities of happiness, no matter whose vision you use. These qualities are here below.
Love This is at the very core of happiness. Feelings of love essentially counter feelings of fear. When we experience love from others, we are experiencing the purest form of love.
Optimism This is much more than thinking positively, it is our mindset, an attitude and a lifestyle choice. Using this we can overcome past traumas and painful events and this causes us to see the potential for opportunity in the saddest of situations.
Courage This allow us to overcome our fear that is hardwired into our neutral pathways and provides us with the balance we need to assess and to rise above these feelings of fear and to act accordingly.
Freedom Every time we make a choice, we define who we are, and we reinforce our sense of freedom. The truth is we can all access this feeling we all have choices to change our situations. The difference between those that do and live free and those who don’t is coming to terms with choice. We all have the potential for a sense of freedom but we need to have courage to allow it.
Proactivity Being proactive ties into our sense of freedom. Those beings who take active steps to shape their lives are the happiest. They are not stuck in being a victim in their own lives. Or victims of circumstances with the whims of chance and fate. Instead they understand that their attitude, beliefs, decisions and actions all shape the direction of their future.
Security Nothing really lasts forever- we might experience moments of certainty, safety and comfort, but these are all subject to change. Like wise, times of difficulty, challenge and hardship will also pass. The security should lie within yourself, as you are the only common factor in all this change. Security comes from your values, beliefs and rules.
Health and happiness are closely intertwined. In order to perceive and truly experience happiness, we need to cultivate a sense of health and well being, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Spirituality beings who experience happiness know that it needs to be cultivated on a number of levels. It’s more than just material happiness.
Altruism Happiness requires you to focus on more than just yourself. Considering others in your thoughts and actions, strengthens your sense of purpose. Notice how people who are self- absorbed are typically not experiencing the levels of happiness they would like.
Perspective This is all about getting outside the “Me” perspective and approaching things knowing that there are shades of grey. It’s about moving beyond an absolutist interpretation of the world, and towards an approach that is more precise and nuanced.
Humour Laughter is a great antidote to many of our challenges. Of course, humour won’t solve all of life’s problems, but it can help to lighten the mood and help us switch perspectives when things are tough. It’s an essential part of a happy attitude.
Purpose People who seek out meaningful experiences and feelings of happiness are typically highly driven beings. They understand their sense of purpose clearly, and are willing to do what it takes to attain their goals and objectives.
There is one more qualities of happiness and that is appreciation which is crucial, because we cannot experience fear and appreciation at the same time. Those beings who are happy are those who take the time to appreciate and show gratitude for what they are privileged to have in their own life. The things that they have, the beings who share their lives with the experiences they are a part of.
