Learned Helplessness

This is a mental state where a person or animal stops trying to change a bad situation. They give up their life, are no longer happy are in apathy and Stockholm syndrome. They are often living in captivity as a slave or prisoner. They face repeated stress and failure that they can not stop or reduce for them. They learn that they have no way out and nothing they do matters or changes things for themselves to stop the violence happening for them. So they give up and stop trying, feeling completely overcome so they don’t try to escape or to improve their situation. Believing they will die like this so they allow the abuse to continue for them. This is often from those being kept in captivity and a prisoner it is from severe abuse that they went through. They feel completely powerless in themselves to stop what is happening for them. They have received continual negative feedback from their situation reduced to the living dead. So they stop trying to get better or to improve in any way as they feel it is pointless, a waste of their energy so they stop trying. They give up their goals and only want to die now. They have deep feelings of sadness and depression that they feel and they can’t over come. Lacking knowledge, skills or path forward to go on, feeling that they hold no power at all in their soul and being. They will have false beliefs they are holding that is then holding them back from any chance of success. They need to build the self- reliance and self–esteem to work on themselves so they can get better here and find a way out. This is a psychological state of being where a person stops trying to escape or improve are in a very negative situation and feel their is no safe way out. Their will be lots of past experience of being trapped, a prisoner, and unable to escape. They hold no control or power for the self. Being trapped in a very abusive situation, they can not find a way out of this. They are harmed with lots of failed attempts made here, as they are passive and get to accept their own fate of being a prisoner or severely abused. This person has laid down, given up and is no longer trying to stop what is happening to them. Often seen whimpering in pain and misery. They have learnt through past experience that they can’t get out, and are totally helpless. All future behaviour is expected to fail and not improve here, can’t take action in any way to break this cycle that is happening for them. The three P’s of this condition are Permanence, believing that the bad events and this permanence will never stop. Pervasiveness believing in bad events are ruining all parts of their life Personalization blaming themselves entirely for what is happening to them.

If you are recovering from this situation the book on Trauma and Recovery from Judith Herman talks about the Total Surrender of a person and the entering of this stage of Learned Helplessness. This is in the chapter called Total Surrender in which a victim is in captivity and can not escape. I would highly recommend reading this book. As I was kept in captivity and I found it really healing to read about this. It explained how you feel, and what needed to happen so you can heal from this event that you went through. This whole book is very helpful for trauma survivors and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a trauma history.
